HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT
During 1960s, a small group of seven Malankara Catholic families staying in and around IC- LIC colonies had occasional gatherings to pray together though they were attending Latin Holy Mass in the nearby Immaculate Conception church (I C church) Borivili. They had an earnest longing for Malankara Catholic liturgical services and they fervently prayed for the same. The pioneers of this great vision were; late Messrs Oommen Abraham Kandathil, P. G. John, Titus Tharakan, Rajan (Mathew Alexander) Messrs N.T. Mathew and IN Thomas. After a while, late Mr. M.M. Rajan too joined this group. As most of their family members were teachers in St Francis D’Assissi School, they used to meet in the classrooms for prayer.Gradually, more families who were strong in their Malankara faith who came to live in and around Borivli joined them and the group started expanding. On Sundays, they were attending Malankara Qurbono at Wadala which is about 30 Kms away from Borivili. At times they used to get the services of priests from Pune Ashram or kerala. The arrival of Rev Fr. Gabriel Possenti OIC in 1974 for higher studies in Mumbai and his stay with the St. Francis Brothers made a mark in the spiritual growth of this community. During this time more Malankara families joined this group . After his completion of studies, there was a long wait. But occasional visits of Priests from Pune and Kerala was an encouragement for them. In 1989 Very Rev Fr. Ignatious Thangalathil OIC was appointed as the Mission superior of Mumbai Pune region and Rev Fr Sajeev Thekkecheruvil OIC also joined and from that time onwards, Holy qurbono was celebrated in Borivili once or twice in a month. Rev Fr. John Berchmans OIC came to serve in Mumbai Pune region in 1990( Later he was appointed as the Coordinator of the then ETRI) and because of his committed and selfless efforts, he could fold a good number of Malankara catholic faithful to this community. The first Malankara Catholic Convention of the faithful in Mumbai Pune Region, was conducted in St. Francis D’Assissi School in the year 1990 and it was a land mark in the growth of this community. The monthly prayer meetings and Christmas Carols strengthened them. For a long period, The St. Francis congregation was benevolent enough to permit the services in their monastery chapel. We express our immense gratitude to them.
In 1992 with the efforts of Late Archbishop Benedict Mar Gregorios,His Eminence Cardinal Simon Pimento consented to the erection of three independent parishes of Malankara Catholic Church in Mumbai and Borivili was one of them. Rev Fr Geevarghese Palavilayil OIC was the first parish priest of St Thomas Parish,Borivil. His significant contribution for bringing up the parish in the initial stage is indelible. Catechism, MCYM, and Mathrusangham activities were functional from 1992. The services of Rev Sr Macreena SIC, Sr Nairmalya SIC, Sr Selka SIC, and Sr Prakash SIC cannot be unrecalled. In 2001, a plot of land was purchased in Kanderpada with the generous contribution of the Parishioners and the Bethany Ashram, where a temporary hall was constructed and the community started conducting Holy Qurbono occasionally. In the year 2004, a primary school was started in that hall to impart education to the economically backward children of the nearby slums. In the year 2010, the new church in Borivili was consecrated at the time of Very Rev Fr Mathew Modiyil OIC as vicar. Late Mr Reji Zacharia took a very responsible role with his wholehearted efforts for the construction of the church and the community fondly remembers his enthusiasm and dedication. Significant efforts were extended by each and every parishioner in this endeavour. The community is proud to say that two young members from our parish ; Fr Raju Parukkoor and Fr George Abhayanand OIC had opted their vocation to serve in the vineyard of the Lord and He accepted their desire.
Mrs. Sarah Mani Kurakose had been conferred with the title of ’Barz- Itho- Kassertho’ (The diligent daughter of the Church) for the services she has been rendering in various fields of the Church as a whole and Borivili Church in particular. Mrs. Rosamma Rajan, is one of the first batch members to be anointed as the member of Sabhathala Suvisesha Sangham. Now the number has escalated to nine including diocesan level members. We are grateful to all priests and Rev sisters who have served in this parish from time to time. The present vicar is Rev Fr Francis Thekkepookkalam OIC and Rev Sr Lucia SIC is the sister in charge. The pious organisations make the parish proud with their collective and fervent efforts. Prayer groups and Suvisesha sangham serve as the core of spirituality.
At present there are 74 families in this parish residing in Bhayander, Mira Road, Dahisar, Borivili and Kandivili. Each and every member contributes for the advancement of this parish and their constant efforts make it a vibrant and animated parish.
